Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror." He is well known for having created-in the pages of the legendary Depression-era pulp magazine Weird Tales-the character Conan the Cimmerian, a.k.a. From the articles I've read and the things I've heard from others, I'm just not convinced that Robert E Howard was a racist.Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. This is a personal opinion and could be entirely wrong. I personally haven't done any extensive research aside from reading the amazing stories that is Conan the barbarian. I full heartedly believe through Howard's writing that he was a down to earth person.

Conan saves the people of tyranny and in place of the king selflessly rules the kingdom. He also mentions that people should be free to practice whatever religion they desire. Conan has been portrayed as a liberator in hour of the dragon for example, when he freed the blacks of their chains. I honestly believe that Howard portrayed his beliefs through Conan.

I don't believe Howard had anything against any kind of race. I think slavery was included in his writing because he probably though it would be realistic in the world he imagined. We all know our world of the past used slaves in the place for manual labor and realistically probably still do in other parts. I feel it would only be natural that conquerors in his world make use of slaves. Conan lived in an aggressive world with continuous warring. I personally feel that Howard used this element to show the kind of world in which Conan lived. My understanding of racism is the belief that one race is superior to another. I can understand where people get that kind of impression. I've heard people say as well as read online that many believe Howard to be racist.
