At their head were survivor-rabbis who sought to accomplish this by invoking their dual identity: survivors of the Holocaust who were also rabbis committed to revitalizing the Torah world. The rabbis of the time wished to solve the problem. They were ‘agunim and ‘agunot, men and women whose spouses had disappeared during the lengthy years of the war without leaving witnesses who could confirm their demise. Soon, however, it transpired that a conspicuous group among the survivors, composed mainly of women, that their resumption of religious life might render them unable to establish families, or at any rate, to do so quickly. Rabbis, foremost those who themselves were survivors, supported the survivors’ wish to set up new families and encouraged believers who gathered around them to marry under Jewish law. Many also sought to establish new families in their desire to cling to life, treat their loneliness, and establish a remembrance for those who had perished. Accordingly, large numbers of survivors chose to search for remaining kin and relatives in other countries in an attempt to reconstitute the family life that had once been theirs.

The proof of this might be that Guzen was one of the least known camps. Compared to Guzen, however, one might almost say that those camps were paradises.
